The dog: our oldest companion
AThe dog was the first animal that humans domesticated, long before sheep, goats or cattle. Scientists believe that dogs descended from wolves that gradually grew less fearful of people, perhaps drawn to the scraps around human camps many thousands of years ago.
BOver time, humans bred dogs for particular tasks — hunting, herding, guarding and companionship — producing the enormous range of breeds we know today. Despite their differences in size and shape, all domestic dogs remain closely related to their wild ancestor, the grey wolf.
