The invention of the telephone

AThe telephone transformed human communication by allowing the human voice to be carried instantly over great distances. Alexander Graham Bell is usually credited with patenting the first practical telephone in 1876, though several inventors were working on similar ideas at the same time.

BEarly telephones required a human operator to connect calls by hand at a central exchange. The later invention of automatic exchanges removed this step, and over the following century the telephone evolved from a rare novelty into a device found in almost every home, and finally into the mobile phones we carry today.
