The many uses of bamboo
ABamboo is one of the most useful plants in the world. Although it looks like a tree, it is actually a type of giant grass, and some species can grow astonishingly fast — up to nearly a metre in a single day under the right conditions.
BFor centuries, people across Asia have used bamboo to build houses, make furniture, cook food and even construct scaffolding. Because it grows so quickly and can be harvested without killing the plant, bamboo is now seen as an environmentally friendly alternative to slower-growing timber.
