The journey of coffee
ACoffee is believed to have originated in the highlands of Ethiopia, where, according to legend, a goat herder noticed his animals becoming lively after eating the berries of a certain shrub. From Ethiopia the plant spread to the Arabian Peninsula, where coffee was first roasted and brewed as a drink.
BBy the seventeenth century coffee had reached Europe, where coffee houses quickly became popular meeting places for conversation and business. Today coffee is one of the most traded commodities in the world, grown across a band of tropical countries and consumed almost everywhere.
