A state civil-services examination that recruits Class-I and Class-II officers for the Government of Bihar — including the Sub-Divisional Magistrate / Deputy Collector, Deputy Superintendent of Police, Bihar Financial Service, Block Development Officer and Revenue Officer cadres — through a three-stage Prelims, Mains and Interview process.

What is the BPSC exam?

The BPSC Combined Competitive Examination is the Bihar Public Service Commission's flagship recruitment for Class-I and Class-II officers of the Government of Bihar. Through a single exam it fills a wide range of coveted posts — Sub-Divisional Magistrate / Deputy Collector in the Bihar Administrative Service, Deputy Superintendent of Police, officers of the Bihar Financial Service, Block Development Officers, Revenue Officers and more. For a graduate in Bihar it is the gateway to a career in state administration, and it draws lakhs of aspirants each cycle.

Selection runs in three stages. The Preliminary Test is a single objective General Studies paper of 150 questions in 2 hours that screens candidates for the Mains; its marks do not count towards the final merit. The Mains is descriptive — a qualifying General Hindi paper, General Studies papers and an essay — and is followed by an Interview (Personality Test). Indian citizen (with the usual provisions for certain other categories, and domicile requirements for some reserved posts as specified by BPSC).
Qualification
A Bachelor's degree in any discipline from a recognised university, or an equivalent qualification, by the cut-off date in the notification.
Minimum age
Generally 20 or 21 years as on the notified date, depending on the post (e.g. DSP posts have a slightly higher minimum).
Maximum age
Around 37 years for the general category, with relaxation — typically up to 40 for backward classes and 42 for SC/ST — as per Bihar government norms.
Physical standards
Police posts such as Deputy Superintendent of Police require prescribed height, chest and physical-efficiency standards; administrative posts do not.

The BPSC Combined Competitive Examination has three stages.
