About the JEE Main exam

Admission to B.E./B.Tech at NITs, IIITs and GFTIs, and the qualifying stage for JEE Advanced (IITs).

What is JEE Main?

JEE Main is India's national-level engineering entrance examination, conducted by the National Testing Agency. Paper 1 (B.E./B.Tech) tests Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics through a computer-based test, and a JEE Main rank is used for admission to the 31 NITs, the IIITs and the Government Funded Technical Institutes, as well as by many state and private engineering colleges.

JEE Main is also the qualifying gate for JEE Advanced: the roughly top 2.5 lakh rankers become eligible to attempt JEE Advanced, the exclusive entrance to the IITs. It is held in two sessions each year, and the better of a candidate's two NTA scores is used to compile the final merit list.

Why the two-session, percentile system matters

Because JEE Main runs across many shifts and two sessions, raw marks from different shifts are not directly comparable. NTA converts every candidate's marks into a normalised percentile score, and the All India Rank is drawn from these percentiles — so a 99 percentile means you scored better than 99% of test-takers, not that you scored 99 marks.

The two-session format is a genuine strategic advantage: you can attempt Session 1, learn from a real exam, and improve in Session 2, with only your best score counting. Practising full-length computer-based mocks that mirror the on-screen interface, numerical-answer input and per-section timing is the most reliable way to convert preparation into percentile.

JEE Main eligibility & exam pattern

Check whether you meet the JEE Main eligibility criteria and understand exactly how the paper is structured and marked before you plan your preparation.

Eligibility criteria

Qualifying exam: Class 12 (10+2) or equivalent with Physics and Mathematics as compulsory subjects, plus one of Chemistry, Biology, Biotechnology or a technical vocational subject.
Year of passing: Candidates who passed in the previous two years or are appearing in the current year are eligible.
Age limit: There is no age limit to appear for JEE Main.
Marks for NIT/IIIT admission: For admission you must score at least 75% in Class 12 (65% for SC/ST) or be in the top 20 percentile of your board.
Number of attempts: You may attempt JEE Main in three consecutive years; both sessions in a year count as one attempt.
Nationality: Indian nationals, NRIs, OCIs, PIOs and foreign nationals are eligible.

Both MCQs and numerical-value questions carry +4 for a correct answer and −1 for an incorrect one. Unattempted questions are not penalised. In each subject 90 questions are shown; you answer all 20 MCQs and any 5 of the 10 numerical questions (75 in all).

How to prepare for JEE Main

Build concepts you can apply, not memorise
JEE Main rewards application over recall. Derive results, understand where each formula comes from, and solve varied problems on a concept before moving on — rote learning breaks down against JEE's twist questions.

Make Mathematics your speed engine
Maths is the most scoring and time-sensitive section. Drill Calculus, Coordinate Geometry and Algebra until you can solve standard problems quickly, freeing time for tougher Physics and Chemistry.

Practise numerical-value questions deliberately
The numerical section now carries negative marking too. Practise entering exact values, rounding correctly, and avoiding calculation slips — these questions are where careful students gain a clear edge.

Master previous-year JEE Main papers
Concepts repeat across years. Solve at least the last ten years of JEE Main papers, topic-wise first and then as timed sets, to internalise the exact style and difficulty NTA sets.

Simulate the computer-based test
Take full 3-hour mocks on screen, with the real question palette and on-screen calculator-free numerical input, so exam day feels familiar and your pacing across three sections is already rehearsed.

Plan a two-session strategy
Treat Session 1 as a high-stakes rehearsal, analyse every mistake, and target a higher percentile in Session 2. Because only your best score counts, there is no downside to attempting both.
