PhysicsSample 1

A particle moves along a straight line so that its speed depends on position as v = 4 sqrt(x) (all quantities in SI units). The acceleration of the particle is:

Solution: Acceleration a = v (dv/dx). With v = 4 x^(1/2), dv/dx = 2 x^(-1/2), so a = 4 x^(1/2) * 2 x^(-1/2) = 8 m/s squared, independent of x.

ChemistrySample 2

The mass of oxygen required for the complete combustion of 16 g of methane (CH4) to CO2 and H2O is (atomic masses C = 12, H = 1, O = 16):

  • A.32 g

Solution: CH4 + 2 O2 -> CO2 + 2 H2O. 16 g of CH4 is 1 mol, which needs 2 mol of O2 = 2 * 32 = 64 g.

The quadratic equation whose roots are the squares of the roots of x squared - 5x + 3 = 0 is:

Solution: If a + b = 5 and ab = 3, then a squared + b squared = 25 - 6 = 19 and a squared * b squared = 9. The required equation is x squared - 19x + 9 = 0.

About the JEE Advanced exam

The gateway examination for admission to the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs). Only candidates who first clear JEE Main and rank among the top qualifiers are eligible to sit JEE Advanced, whose score decides IIT seat allocation through JoSAA counselling.

What is the JEE Advanced exam?

JEE Advanced is the entrance examination for admission to the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs). It is conducted once a year by one of the IITs on a rotating basis, under the guidance of the JEE Apex Board. Unlike JEE Main, which is a screening and qualifying exam taken by lakhs of students, JEE Advanced is open only to the top qualifiers of JEE Main — around the top 2.5 lakh candidates across categories — making it a genuinely selective, second-stage examination.

The exam has two compulsory papers, Paper 1 and Paper 2, each three hours long, and each testing Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics. It is computer-based. What sets JEE Advanced apart is that its pattern is not fixed: the organising IIT changes the number of questions, the question types and the marking scheme every year. A typical paper mixes single-correct MCQs, multiple-correct MCQs, integer/numerical-answer questions and match-the-column sets, often with partial credit and section-wise negative marking. This unpredictability is deliberate — it rewards deep conceptual understanding and adaptability rather than memorised templates.

How JEE Advanced differs from JEE Main

JEE Main is the qualifying gateway: it is more predictable, largely single-correct and numerical in format, and it decides admission to the NITs, IIITs and GFTIs as well as eligibility for JEE Advanced. JEE Advanced sits one level above it. The questions are longer, more multi-step and more conceptual; a single problem may weave together two or three ideas, and the multiple-correct format punishes shallow reading. Where JEE Main rewards speed and accuracy on standard problems, JEE Advanced rewards the ability to analyse an unfamiliar situation from first principles.

After JEE Advanced, seat allocation into the IITs is done through JoSAA counselling on the basis of your Common Rank List (CRL) and category rank. Candidates interested in the B.Arch programme at the IITs that offer it must additionally clear the Architecture Aptitude Test (AAT). Because both papers count and the marking varies, the exam favours candidates who are strong and balanced across all three subjects rather than those who lean heavily on one.

You must qualify JEE Main and be among the top rank-list candidates (roughly the top 2.5 lakh across categories) declared eligible for JEE Advanced.
Number of attempts
A candidate may attempt JEE Advanced at most twice, in two consecutive years.
Age
Age criteria apply as specified in the information brochure, with relaxation for reserved categories per the rules of the year.
Class 12 (or equivalent)
You must have passed Class 12 with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics, in the current or the immediately preceding year.
Earlier IIT admission
Candidates already admitted to an IIT (or who have accepted an IIT seat earlier) are generally not eligible, subject to the year's rules.

JEE Advanced deliberately changes its pattern every year — the organising IIT decides the number of questions, the question types (single-correct MCQs, multiple-correct MCQs, integer/numerical-answer questions and match-the-column) and the marking, which typically combines full marks, partial marks for partially correct multiple-answer questions, and section-wise negative marking. Both Paper 1 and Paper 2 are compulsory and each runs for three hours, covering Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics. There is no single fixed scheme, so candidates must read the instructions of each year's paper carefully. How to prepare for JEE Advanced

    Build unshakeable fundamentals

    JEE Advanced tests concepts, not recall. Make sure every core idea in mechanics, electromagnetism, physical/organic/inorganic chemistry and calculus is understood from first principles so you can apply it to unfamiliar situations.

    Practise multi-concept problems

    Advanced questions often combine two or three topics in one problem. Solve mixed problem sets rather than single-topic drills so you learn to recognise which ideas a question is quietly pulling together.

    Master every question type

    Because the pattern changes yearly, get comfortable with single-correct, multiple-correct, integer/numerical and match-the-column formats. Multiple-correct questions with partial marking especially reward careful, complete analysis.

    Balance all three subjects

    Ranks depend on the aggregate of both papers and on per-subject cut-offs, so a weak subject can sink an otherwise strong score. Keep Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics all above the qualifying line.

    Simulate the two-paper day

    Take full three-hour mocks for Paper 1 and Paper 2, ideally on the same day, to build the stamina and focus the real six-hour examination demands, and review every solution afterwards.

    Since marking and question types are announced fresh each year, spend the first minutes of the real paper understanding the marking scheme so you attempt strategically and avoid needless negative marking.

JEE Advanced scores, ranks & cut-offs

JEE Advanced does not publish a fixed marking scheme in advance: the number of questions, the mix of single-correct, multiple-correct, integer/numerical and match-the-column types, and the partial and section-wise negative marking are all set fresh each year by the organising IIT. What stays constant is that both Paper 1 and Paper 2 are compulsory, each is three hours long and each covers Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics.
