About the Kerala PSC Civil Excise Officer exam

Recruits Civil Excise Officers (Trainee) for the Kerala State Excise Department, which enforces the Abkari Act and the NDPS Act, regulates liquor and runs campaigns against alcohol and drug abuse.

What does a Civil Excise Officer do?

Civil Excise Officers are the frontline staff of the Kerala Excise Department. They carry out raids and checks under the Abkari Act and the NDPS Act, inspect licensed liquor premises, detect illicit liquor and drugs, and take part in awareness campaigns such as Vimukthi.

Selection is through Kerala PSC: the Plus Two Level Prelims first, then a post-specific main examination, followed by physical measurements and an efficiency test. A ranked list is then published for each district.

How to prepare for the main examination

The 20-mark special-topics section is what sets this exam apart — and it rewards focused study. Learn the key definitions and sections of the Abkari Act, the NDPS Act (especially sections 20, 21, 22 and 50 and the small/commercial quantity rules), COTPA sections 4 to 7, the foreign liquor licence types and the basic chemistry of alcohol.

The rest of the paper follows the usual Kerala PSC pattern: 40 marks of GK with the Constitution carrying 8, plus current affairs, arithmetic, English and Malayalam. Take full timed mocks and keep the 1/3 negative mark in mind.
