NEET PG — the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (Postgraduate) — is the single national entrance examination conducted by the National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences (NBEMS) for admission to postgraduate medical courses in India. A candidate's rank in NEET PG decides entry to MD, MS and PG Diploma seats in medical colleges as well as to DNB and Diplomate courses, across both government and private institutions.

The exam is a single computer-based paper of 200 multiple-choice questions worth 800 marks, to be answered in 3 hours 30 minutes, and it draws on all 19 MBBS subjects — from the pre-clinical anatomy, physiology and biochemistry, through the para-clinical pathology, pharmacology, microbiology and forensic medicine, to the clinical subjects of medicine, surgery, obstetrics and gynaecology, paediatrics and the specialties. Each correct answer earns 4 marks and each wrong answer costs 1 mark, so both broad recall across subjects and disciplined attempting decide the final rank.

Because NEET PG tests all of MBBS in one paper, coverage matters as much as depth. High-yield subjects — pathology, pharmacology, medicine and surgery — carry a large share of the questions, so a strong grasp of mechanisms, classic clinical associations, first-line drugs and standard diagnostic findings is more rewarding than isolated facts. Building an integrated understanding across subjects (for example, linking a pathology to its pharmacology and its clinical presentation) helps because many questions are single-best-answer clinical vignettes.

With negative marking of 1 mark per wrong answer, accuracy is decisive: attempt confidently when you can reason to a best answer and avoid blind guessing. The 200-question paper over 3.5 hours also demands stamina and pacing, so full-length timed mocks that reproduce the real length and marking are essential to learn subject balance, manage time and review the solution for every question you miss.
