RRB ALP sample questions

A few real RRB ALP questions with answers and step-by-step solutions, in the exact style of the full mock tests.

MathematicsSample 1

What is the smallest number that must be added to 620 to make it a perfect square?

  • A.5
  • B.4
  • C.9
  • D.6

Solution: 24 squared is 576 and 25 squared is 625. Since 620 lies below 625, add 625 - 620 = 5 to reach the next perfect square.

General Intelligence & ReasoningSample 2

Piston : Cylinder :: Bullet : ?

  • A.Barrel
  • B.Trigger
  • C.Target
  • D.Powder

Solution: A piston moves inside a cylinder just as a bullet travels inside a barrel.

General ScienceSample 3

Why does a moving train take a long distance to stop even after brakes are applied?

  • A.Because of inertia of motion
  • B.Because of gravity
  • C.Because of friction of air
  • D.Because of magnetism

Solution: A body in motion tends to stay in motion; this inertia of motion keeps the heavy train moving until friction gradually stops it.

General Awareness & Current AffairsSample 4

The headquarters of Indian Railways is located in:

  • A.New Delhi
  • B.Mumbai
  • C.Kolkata
  • D.Chennai

Solution: The Railway Board, the apex body of Indian Railways, is headquartered in New Delhi.

About the RRB ALP exam

A national railway recruitment exam that selects Assistant Loco Pilots and related technician posts across the zones of the Indian Railways, driving and maintaining the country's locomotives.

What is the RRB ALP exam?

RRB ALP is the Railway Recruitment Boards' exam for the post of Assistant Loco Pilot in the Indian Railways, along with related technician posts. Assistant Loco Pilots assist in driving and maintaining locomotives, so the selection tests not only school-level aptitude but also technical trade knowledge and the alertness and reaction skills a running-staff role demands. Because it needs a Class 10 pass plus an ITI or a relevant engineering diploma or degree, it draws a very large number of technically qualified applicants each cycle.

The selection has several parts: a first-stage Computer Based Test (CBT 1) that screens candidates, a second-stage CBT (CBT 2) with a merit-deciding Part A and a qualifying trade-based Part B, a Computer Based Aptitude Test (CBAT), and finally Document Verification and a Medical Examination. CBT 1 is a 60-minute, 75-question paper across four sections — Mathematics, General Intelligence & Reasoning, General Science and General Awareness & Current Affairs — set at matriculation level with one-third negative marking, so accuracy under time is what carries you through.

How to clear RRB ALP

CBT 1 is Class-10 level, so it rewards speed and accuracy on familiar material rather than advanced study. Mathematics and Reasoning together make up the bulk of the paper and are the most scoreable — drill number system, BODMAS, percentage, ratio, time and work, speed, mensuration, analogy, series, coding-decoding, syllogism and direction sense until they are quick and automatic. General Science at Class-10 level is stable and high-return, so revise basic physics, chemistry and biology steadily.

Because every wrong answer costs a third of a mark, disciplined attempting matters: solve what you know quickly and avoid blind guesses. Full-length timed mocks build the pacing the 60-minute paper demands. Remember that CBT 1 is only screening — plan ahead for the trade-based Part B of CBT 2 in your ITI or diploma discipline, and practise the aptitude-style tasks that the CBAT uses to judge reaction speed, concentration and judgement for loco-running duties.

RRB ALP eligibility & exam pattern

Check whether you meet the RRB ALP eligibility criteria and understand exactly how the paper is structured and marked before you plan your preparation.

The RRB ALP first-stage Computer Based Test (CBT 1) has 75 objective questions carrying 75 marks, to be answered in 60 minutes, across four sections: Mathematics, General Intelligence & Reasoning, General Science, and General Awareness & Current Affairs. Each correct answer earns 1 mark and each wrong answer carries a penalty of one-third (1/3) of a mark; unanswered questions score zero. CBT 1 is only a screening test — its normalised score decides who advances but is not counted in the final merit. Qualified candidates sit CBT 2, which has two parts: Part A (general, merit-deciding) and Part B (a qualifying trade / relevant-discipline paper). Those who clear CBT 2 take the Computer Based Aptitude Test (CBAT), and finally Document Verification and a Medical Examination as per the vision and fitness standards for loco-running staff. On ExamguruX, each question is scored +1 with a 1/3 penalty for a wrong answer, mirroring the real marking, and every question has a worked solution.

Duration: 60 minutes (CBT 1).

How to prepare for RRB ALP

A proven, focused RRB ALP preparation method — from building strong fundamentals to peaking with full-length mocks.

  1. 1

    Own Maths and Reasoning

These two sections dominate CBT 1 and are the most scoreable at Class-10 level. Drill number system, BODMAS, percentage, ratio, time & work, speed, mensuration, analogy, series, coding-decoding, syllogism and direction until they are fast and automatic.

  2. 2

    Keep General Science sharp

Class-10 physics, chemistry and biology are stable, high-return topics. Revise basic laws, everyday-science applications and human biology a little every day rather than cramming.

  3. 3

    Build durable General Awareness

Focus on static GK — polity, geography, history, institutions and railways facts — plus long-lived current-affairs items, and revise them regularly.

  4. 4

    Respect the one-third negative marking

At −1/3 per wrong answer, blind guessing is costly. Attempt when you can eliminate to a confident choice, and leave questions you genuinely cannot judge.

  5. 5

Prepare Part B and the CBAT early

CBT 1 is only screening. Study the trade / discipline syllabus for the qualifying Part B of CBT 2, and practise aptitude-style reaction and concentration tasks for the CBAT well in advance.

  6. 6

    Practise speed with full mocks

The 60-minute paper is speed-based. Take full timed mocks to learn section balance and pacing, and review the solution for every question you miss.

RRB ALP scoring & selection

The RRB ALP first-stage CBT has 75 questions for 75 marks in 60 minutes across four sections — Mathematics, General Intelligence & Reasoning, General Science and General Awareness & Current Affairs. Each wrong answer carries a one-third negative penalty. CBT 1 is a screening stage; qualified candidates take CBT 2 (a general Part A and a trade-based Part B), then the Computer Based Aptitude Test (CBAT), and finally Document Verification and a Medical Examination. The bands below are indicative — real cutoffs shift each year with vacancies and difficulty.

RRB ALP marks vs. rank

RRB ALP — frequently asked questions

Quick, reliable answers to the questions RRB ALP aspirants ask most.

What is the RRB ALP selection process?

It has several stages: a first-stage CBT (CBT 1) that screens candidates, a second-stage CBT (CBT 2) with a merit-deciding Part A and a qualifying trade-based Part B, a Computer Based Aptitude Test (CBAT), and finally Document Verification and a Medical Examination. CBT 1 is only a screen; final merit comes from CBT 2 Part A.

What is the RRB ALP CBT 1 exam pattern?

CBT 1 has 75 questions for 75 marks in 60 minutes, across four sections — Mathematics, General Intelligence & Reasoning, General Science, and General Awareness & Current Affairs. The paper is at matriculation (Class 10) level.

Is there negative marking in RRB ALP?

Yes. Each correct answer earns 1 mark and each wrong answer carries a penalty of one-third (1/3) of a mark. There is no penalty for unanswered questions, so guess only when you can eliminate options to a confident choice.

What is the eligibility for RRB ALP?

You need a Class 10 pass plus an ITI in a relevant trade, or a relevant engineering diploma or degree, and you must generally be between 18 and 30 years old, with age relaxation for reserved categories. You must also meet the strict A-3 medical standard for loco-running staff.

What is the CBAT in RRB ALP?

The Computer Based Aptitude Test is a psycho-technical stage taken after CBT 2. It uses several test batteries to measure reaction time, concentration, perception and judgement — skills essential for driving locomotives. You must qualify every battery to the required standard.

How should I use these mock tests?

Take full-length timed mocks to build speed and section balance under the real 60-minute clock and one-third negative marking, and review the solution for every question. Use the topic tests to drill mathematics, reasoning, general science and general awareness until each becomes a reliable source of marks.
