What is the RRB NTPC exam?

RRB NTPC — Non-Technical Popular Categories — is the Railway Recruitment Boards' recruitment for the Indian Railways' non-technical, public-facing and clerical posts. These include Station Master, Goods Train Manager (formerly Guard), Commercial cum Ticket Clerk, Senior Clerk cum Typist, Junior Account Assistant cum Typist and Commercial Apprentice — the people who run stations, move freight and serve passengers across the network.

The exam is offered at two levels — Undergraduate (12th-standard posts) and Graduate (degree-level posts) — through a common syllabus but with different post categories and depth. It is among the most sought-after government exams in India, with recent cycles drawing tens of lakhs of applicants. Selection runs through two Computer-Based Tests, taken in any of 15 languages, plus a skill or aptitude test for certain posts.

Why NTPC is a two-stage, high-stakes exam

Unlike Group D's single CBT, NTPC has two computer-based stages. CBT 1 is only a screening test — it decides who advances but does not itself count towards the final merit. CBT 2, which is longer (120 questions) and slightly tougher, is where the merit list is built. That structure rewards candidates who can perform consistently across both sittings rather than peaking once.

A second distinctive feature is the post-specific stage. Typist and clerk posts require a Typing Skill Test, while the coveted Station Master and Traffic Assistant posts require a Computer-Based Aptitude Test (CBAT) — a psychometric test of reaction time and concentration with a strict minimum T-score, where scribe relaxations do not apply. General Awareness is the heaviest section (about 40% of CBT 1), so broad, current, factual knowledge is decisive. Undergraduate-level posts
A pass in 12th (10+2) or its equivalent — for posts such as Junior Clerk cum Typist, Accounts Clerk cum Typist, Trains Clerk and Commercial cum Ticket Clerk.
Graduate-level posts
A Bachelor's degree in any discipline — for posts such as Station Master, Goods Train Manager (Guard), Senior Clerk cum Typist, Junior Account Assistant cum Typist and Commercial Apprentice.
Typing / aptitude requirements
Typist/clerk posts require a Typing Skill Test; Station Master and Traffic Assistant require a Computer-Based Aptitude Test (CBAT) with a minimum T-score, and cannot use scribe-assisted relaxations for it.
Age limit
Broadly 18–33 years for undergraduate posts and 18–36 years for graduate posts (as notified), with upper-age relaxation for SC/ST, OBC and other reserved categories.
Medical standards
Candidates must meet the medical fitness standard prescribed for the post (e.g. A2, A3, B1, C1, C2); Station Master and other safety posts have stricter vision requirements.

RRB NTPC is a two-stage exam. CBT 1 is a screening test of 100 questions worth 100 marks (1 mark each) in 90 minutes — General Awareness (40), Mathematics (30) and Reasoning (30). How to prepare for RRB NTPC

    Build a wide General Awareness base

    GA is the single largest section — around 40 of 100 in CBT 1 and 50 of 120 in CBT 2. Cover history, polity, geography, general science, static GK and about a year of current affairs, keeping crisp, revisable notes of high-yield facts.

    Make arithmetic fast and reliable

    The Mathematics section spans number system, percentage, ratio, average, profit & loss, interest, time-speed-distance, geometry and mensuration. Practise for both accuracy and speed, since CBT 2 raises the depth and the negative marking punishes errors.

    Score heavily in Reasoning

    Reasoning is the most predictable section. Drill series, coding-decoding, analogies, classification, blood relations, calendars and directions until they are automatic — reliable Reasoning marks anchor both CBTs.

    Prepare for CBT 2 from the start

    Because CBT 1 is only a screening stage and CBT 2 decides merit, don't stop at CBT 1 level. Practise the longer 120-question pattern and the tougher questions so the merit stage feels routine when you reach it.

    If you are targeting Station Master or Traffic Assistant, prepare specifically for the Computer-Based Aptitude Test, which needs a minimum T-score and no scribe relaxation. For clerk/typist posts, build typing speed and accuracy well ahead of the skill test.

It measures reaction time, concentration and perceptual speed, and candidates must achieve a minimum T-score of 42 in each test battery. Scribe-assisted relaxations do not apply to the CBAT.
