SBI PO sample questions

A few real SBI PO questions with answers and step-by-step solutions, in the exact style of the full mock tests.

Reasoning Ability & Computer AptitudeSample 1

Statements: All pens are books. All books are tables. Which conclusion definitely follows?

  • A.All pens are tables
  • B.All tables are pens
  • C.Some pens are not tables
  • D.No book is a table

Solution: Since all pens are books and all books are tables, every pen is also a table, so 'All pens are tables' follows.

Quantitative AptitudeSample 2

Simplify: 15% of 240 + 25% of 160.

  • A.66
  • B.76
  • C.86
  • D.72

Solution: 15% of 240 = 36 and 25% of 160 = 40, so the sum is 36 + 40 = 76.

English LanguageSample 3

Identify the part that contains an error: 'One of the students / have not / submitted / their assignment.'

  • A.One of the students
  • B.have not
  • C.submitted
  • D.their assignment

Solution: The subject 'one' is singular, so the verb should be 'has not', making 'have not' the error.

General / Banking / Economy AwarenessSample 4

In banking, CRR stands for:

  • A.Cash Reserve Ratio
  • B.Credit Reserve Ratio
  • C.Current Reserve Ratio
  • D.Cash Refund Ratio

Solution: CRR is the Cash Reserve Ratio, the share of deposits banks must keep as reserves with the RBI.

About the SBI PO exam

A national recruitment exam that selects Probationary Officers for the State Bank of India — India's largest public-sector bank — placing successful candidates on an officer-cadre career that begins as a Probationary Officer and grows into scale-wise management roles across branch banking and specialised verticals.

What is the SBI PO exam?

SBI PO is the State Bank of India's recruitment exam for Probationary Officers — an officer-cadre entry into India's largest public-sector bank. It is one of the most sought-after banking exams in the country because it offers a respected officer's post, a strong pay scale and a clear path into branch management and specialised banking verticals. Because lakhs of graduates compete for a limited number of vacancies, the exam is known for a high cutoff and sharp sectional competition.

Selection runs in three phases. The Preliminary exam is a fast, qualifying screen of 100 questions in 60 minutes with 20-minute sectional timing across English, Quantitative Aptitude and Reasoning. Candidates who clear it sit the Mains — a 155-question, 200-mark objective test across Reasoning & Computer Aptitude, Data Analysis & Interpretation, General/Economy/Banking Awareness and English, plus a 50-mark Descriptive English paper. Those who qualify the Mains face a Psychometric test, a Group Exercise and an Interview, and the final merit is built from the Mains and interview scores.

How to clear SBI PO

The Prelims reward speed under sectional timing, so build the reflexes to solve simplification, number series, puzzles and cloze quickly and to attempt only what you can clear within each 20-minute window. Data Analysis & Interpretation and Reasoning carry the heaviest marks in the Mains, so master calculation speed, caselet DI, and high-set puzzles and seating arrangements — these are where the exam is won or lost.

General/Economy/Banking Awareness is the most scoreable Mains section for disciplined aspirants: learn banking terms, RBI and monetary-policy basics, financial abbreviations and static banking GK steadily rather than cramming. English demands accurate grammar, vocabulary and comprehension in both the objective and descriptive papers, so practise error spotting, rearrangement and short essay and letter writing. Because every wrong answer costs 0.25, attempt only when you can eliminate to a confident choice, and use full timed mocks to build the stamina the 3-hour Mains demands.

SBI PO is conducted in three phases. The Preliminary exam is a 1-hour online paper of 100 questions for 100 marks with 20-minute sectional timing — English Language (30 questions/30 marks), Quantitative Aptitude (35 questions/35 marks) and Reasoning Ability (35 questions/35 marks); it is only qualifying and its marks do not count towards the final merit. The Mains exam has an objective test of 155 questions for 200 marks in 3 hours — Reasoning & Computer Aptitude (45 questions/60 marks), Data Analysis & Interpretation (35 questions/60 marks), General/Economy/Banking Awareness (40 questions/40 marks) and English Language (35 questions/40 marks) — followed by a 30-minute Descriptive English test (a letter and an essay) for 50 marks. Every wrong answer in the objective tests carries a penalty of one-fourth (0.25) of the marks assigned to that question; unanswered questions score zero. Shortlisted candidates then take a Psychometric test, a Group Exercise and an Interview worth 50 marks, and the final merit is drawn from the Mains (200) and the Group Exercise & Interview (50). On ExamguruX, each objective question is scored +1 for a correct answer and −0.25 for a wrong one, mirroring the real marking, and every question comes with a worked solution.

Duration: 3 hours (Mains objective) + 30 min descriptive.

How to prepare for SBI PO

A proven, focused SBI PO preparation method — from building strong fundamentals to peaking with full-length mocks.

  1. 1

Win the DI and Reasoning sets

Data Analysis & Interpretation and Reasoning carry 60 marks each in the Mains. Drill caselet and table DI, quantity comparison, high-level puzzles and seating arrangement until you can solve full sets accurately at speed.

  2. 2

Beat the sectional clock in Prelims

Each Prelims section has only 20 minutes. Practise picking off simplification, number series, easy puzzles and cloze first, and learn to leave a hard set rather than sink the whole section into it.

  3. 3

    Bank on Banking Awareness

General/Economy/Banking Awareness is the fastest-scoring Mains section. Learn banking terms, RBI and monetary-policy basics (CRR, SLR, repo, reverse repo), financial abbreviations and static banking GK a little every day.

  4. 4

    Train both English papers

English appears in the Mains objective (40 marks) and the descriptive test (50 marks). Practise reading comprehension, cloze, error spotting and rearrangement, and write timed letters and essays for the descriptive round.

  5. 5

    Respect the negative marking

At −0.25 per wrong answer, blind guessing erodes your score. Attempt when you can eliminate options to a confident choice, and skip questions you genuinely cannot judge.

  6. 6

    Simulate the full Mains

The Mains objective runs 3 hours. Take full timed mocks to build stamina and section balance, then review the worked solution for every question you miss to convert weak areas into reliable marks.

SBI PO scoring & selection

The SBI PO process has three stages. The Preliminary exam (100 questions, 100 marks, 1 hour with 20-minute sectional timing) is only a qualifying screen. The Mains — an objective paper of 155 questions for 200 marks plus a 50-mark descriptive English test — decides who reaches the final round. The Mains score (200) is added to the Group Exercise & Interview (50) to form the final merit out of 250. Every objective wrong answer carries a 1/4 (0.25) mark penalty. The bands below are indicative — real cutoffs shift each year with vacancies and paper difficulty.

SBI PO — frequently asked questions

Quick, reliable answers to the questions SBI PO aspirants ask most.

What is the SBI PO selection process?

Three phases: a qualifying Preliminary exam, a Main exam (objective plus a descriptive English test), and a Psychometric test with a Group Exercise & Interview. The Prelims are only a screen; final merit is built from the Mains (200 marks) and the Group Exercise & Interview (50 marks).

What is the SBI PO exam pattern?

The Prelims have 100 questions for 100 marks in 60 minutes with 20-minute sectional timing across English (30), Quantitative Aptitude (35) and Reasoning (35). The Mains have 155 objective questions for 200 marks in 3 hours — Reasoning & Computer Aptitude (60), Data Analysis & Interpretation (60), General/Economy/Banking Awareness (40) and English (40) — plus a 30-minute Descriptive English test for 50 marks.

Is there negative marking in SBI PO?

Yes. Each wrong answer in the objective tests carries a penalty of one-fourth (0.25) of the marks assigned to that question. There is no penalty for unanswered questions, so guess only when you can eliminate options to a confident choice.

What is the eligibility for SBI PO?

You need a graduate degree in any discipline from a recognised university and must generally be between 21 and 30 years old as on the cut-off date, with age relaxation for reserved categories. The number of attempts is limited by category.

What career does SBI PO lead to?

Selected candidates join as Probationary Officers on a two-year probation and, once confirmed, rise through officer scales — Assistant Manager, Deputy Manager, Manager and beyond — with opportunities in branch banking and specialised verticals such as retail, corporate, treasury and wealth.

How should I use these mock tests?

Take full-length timed mocks to build speed, sectional discipline and stamina under the real marking, and review the worked solution for every question. Use the topic tests to drill Data Interpretation, puzzles, banking awareness and English until each becomes a reliable source of marks.
