About the SEBI Grade A exam

A national recruitment exam that selects Officers of Grade A (Assistant Managers) for the Securities and Exchange Board of India across streams — General, Legal, Information Technology, Research and Official Language — the officer cadre that helps regulate and develop India's securities market.

What is the SEBI Grade A exam?

SEBI Grade A is the recruitment examination conducted by the Securities and Exchange Board of India to select Officers of Grade A, designated Assistant Managers. SEBI — the Securities and Exchange Board of India — was established in 1988 and became a statutory body under the SEBI Act, 1992; it is the regulator responsible for protecting investors and developing and regulating India's securities market. Grade A officers form the entry-level officer cadre that carries out this regulatory and developmental work across several specialised streams.

Recruitment is across streams — General, Legal, Information Technology, Research and Official Language — and the selection has three parts: Phase I, an online objective screening test with a general Paper 1 and a stream-specific Paper 2; Phase II, a main examination with objective and descriptive papers; and an Interview. The objective papers carry one-fourth (0.25) negative marking, so accuracy under time matters, and final merit is based on the Phase II and interview performance.

How to clear SEBI Grade A

Phase I Paper 1 rewards breadth across four areas: general awareness with a strong securities-market and financial-sector focus, English, quantitative aptitude and reasoning. Because SEBI regulates the securities market, invest early in understanding the market's building blocks — shares, bonds, mutual funds, IPOs, stock exchanges and the roles of regulators like SEBI and the RBI — alongside banking and economy basics and durable static GK.

Quantitative aptitude and reasoning are the most scoreable with practice: drill percentage, interest, ratio, averages, data interpretation, series, coding-decoding and syllogism until they are quick and accurate. English rewards grammar, vocabulary and comprehension. Since every wrong objective answer costs a quarter mark, attempt with discipline. For Phase II, build depth in your chosen stream and practise the descriptive paper, and use full-length timed mocks to master pacing under the real clock.

SEBI Officer Grade A selection has three stages. Phase I is an online objective screening test with two papers — Paper 1 covers general awareness (including securities market and financial-sector topics), English language, quantitative aptitude and test of reasoning, while Paper 2 covers the candidate's chosen stream (General, Legal, Information Technology, Research or Official Language). Phase II is the main examination with objective and descriptive components, again including a general paper and a stream-specific paper. The objective papers carry a negative marking of one-fourth (0.25) of the marks assigned to a question for each wrong answer; unanswered questions score zero. Candidates who clear Phase I and Phase II are called for an Interview, and the final merit combines the Phase II and interview scores. On ExamguruX, each objective question is scored +1 with a 0.25 penalty for a wrong answer, mirroring the real one-fourth negative marking, and every question has a worked solution.

Duration: Phase I (objective).

How to prepare for SEBI Grade A

A proven, focused SEBI Grade A preparation method — from building strong fundamentals to peaking with full-length mocks.

  1. 1

    Master the securities market

General awareness leans heavily on the securities market and financial sector. Learn the building blocks — shares, bonds, mutual funds, IPOs, exchanges — and the roles of SEBI and the RBI, plus banking and economy basics.

  2. 2

    Own Quant and Reasoning

These sections are the most scoreable with practice. Drill percentage, interest, ratio, averages, data interpretation, series, coding-decoding and syllogism until they are fast and automatic.

  3. 3

    Keep English accurate

Practise grammar, vocabulary, error spotting, fill in the blanks and reading comprehension for quick, reliable marks in Paper 1.

  4. 4

    Respect the negative marking

At one-fourth (0.25) per wrong objective answer, blind guessing is costly. Attempt when you can eliminate to a confident choice, and skip what you genuinely can't judge.

  5. 5

Build stream depth for Phase II

Phase II includes a stream-specific paper with descriptive components. Build depth in your stream — General, Legal, IT, Research or Official Language — and practise writing structured answers.

  6. 6

    Practise with full timed mocks

Take full-length timed mocks to learn section balance and pacing under the real clock and negative marking, and review the solution for every question you miss.
