SSC Stenographer Mock Tests, Syllabus & Complete Exam Guide

SSC Stenographer is the Staff Selection Commission's recruitment exam for the posts of Stenographer Grade C and Grade D in the various ministries, departments and offices of the Government of India. Grade C stenographers typically work in senior secretariat roles at a higher dictation speed, while Grade D stenographers support offices across central departments. Because it needs only a Class 12 qualification and a stenography skill, it attracts lakhs of aspirants seeking a stable central-government career each year.

The selection has two parts: a Computer Based Test (CBT) and a Skill Test. The CBT is a 2-hour, 200-question paper across three sections — General Intelligence & Reasoning (50), General Awareness (50) and English Language & Comprehension (100) — set at roughly Class-12 level, with 0.25 negative marking. Candidates who clear the CBT are called for the Skill Test, where they take dictation in shorthand and transcribe it on a computer within a set time. The Skill Test is qualifying, so a strong CBT score plus a clean transcription is what secures selection.

English Language & Comprehension is the decisive section — with 100 of the 200 questions, it carries half the paper. Master grammar (error spotting, sentence improvement, voice and narration), vocabulary (synonyms, antonyms, idioms, one-word substitution) and reading comprehension until they are quick and accurate; strength here alone can lift your CBT score sharply. General Awareness is high-return and stable, so build static GK — polity, history, geography, economy and science — steadily and revise regularly.

General Intelligence & Reasoning is the most scoreable at Class-12 level: drill coding-decoding, series, analogy, blood relations, direction sense and syllogisms until they are automatic. Because every wrong answer costs a quarter mark, attempt with discipline and avoid blind guesses. Alongside the CBT, practise shorthand dictation and transcription steadily — the Skill Test is qualifying, and consistent speed practice keeps it from becoming a fresh hurdle after the written stage.
