The TCS National Qualifier Test is an industry-recognised assessment run by Tata Consultancy Services through its TCS iON platform. Rather than being a single company's screening round, it is designed as a portable measure of job-readiness: you sit the test once, and the resulting NQT score is used by TCS for its own fresher hiring and is also made available to a broad pool of other recruiting corporates. For most engineering and MCA students in India it is the single highest-leverage placement test to prepare for.

The test is sectional and timer-locked. Every candidate takes the Foundation section — Numerical Ability, Verbal Ability and Reasoning Ability — which is what qualifies you for the Ninja track. Candidates targeting the higher-package Digital track additionally take the Advanced section, which raises the difficulty of the quantitative and reasoning questions and adds a hands-on coding round judged on hidden test cases. Shortlisted candidates then move to technical and HR interviews.

The single most important structural fact is that there is no negative marking. Because a blank and a wrong answer score identically, the correct strategy is to attempt every question — eliminate what you can and commit. The second structural fact is sectional timing: you cannot bank time from an easy section to spend on a hard one, so each section has to be paced on its own terms.

Numerical Ability rewards the standard arithmetic toolkit — percentages, ratio, time-speed-distance, time-and-work, averages, number system and probability — practised until the method is automatic rather than rediscovered under the clock. Verbal Ability is won on reading comprehension accuracy and clean grammar. Reasoning turns on recognising the pattern quickly in series, coding-decoding, blood relations and seating puzzles. Programming Logic is the section that most separates candidates in the Digital track: complexity, data structures, OOP concepts, pointers, DBMS and operating-system basics are all high-return and stable year to year.
