About the TNPSC Group 1 exam

Recruitment to Tamil Nadu's top Group I posts such as Deputy Collector, Deputy Superintendent of Police and Assistant Commissioner.

What is TNPSC Group 1?

TNPSC Group 1 — formally the Combined Civil Services Examination-I — is the Tamil Nadu Public Service Commission's flagship examination for the state's most senior directly-recruited administrative posts. It is the state-level equivalent of the UPSC Civil Services Examination and is among the most competitive exams in Tamil Nadu.

The selection runs in three stages: a Preliminary examination (objective, for screening), a Main examination (descriptive, which decides the merit) and an oral test (interview). The exam is conducted in both Tamil and English, so a candidate may read the questions and write the answers in whichever official language they are more comfortable with.

Why the post you get depends on your rank

Clearing TNPSC Group 1 leads to posts such as Deputy Collector, Deputy Superintendent of Police, Assistant Commissioner (Commercial Taxes) and District Registrar — roles that carry real authority in the administration of the state. The specific post you are allotted depends on your final merit rank and the preferences you submit.

Because the Preliminary is only a gateway and the Mains and interview decide the rank, a strong all-round preparation matters: you need enough in the Prelims to qualify comfortably, and then the depth and writing skill to convert that into a high Mains score. Practising bilingual, exam-accurate mock tests is the most reliable way to build both the speed for the Prelims and the command of Tamil Nadu-specific material that sets Group 1 apart.

TNPSC Group 1 eligibility & exam pattern

The Preliminary paper has 200 questions, each carrying 1.5 marks for a total of 300 marks, with NO negative marking — so you should attempt every question. The paper is offered in both Tamil and English, and you may answer in either language.

Duration: 3 hours (180 minutes).

How to prepare for TNPSC Group 1

A proven, focused TNPSC Group 1 preparation method — from building strong fundamentals to peaking with full-length mocks.

  1. 1

    Master the Tamil Nadu-specific units

History, culture, socio-political movements and development administration of Tamil Nadu carry a large, exam-defining share of marks. This is where Group 1 differs most from national exams — study the state board Tamil Nadu textbooks thoroughly.

  2. 2

Build a strong NCERT and state-board base

Polity, History, Geography, Economy and Science at degree standard rest on solid fundamentals. Combine NCERT with Tamil Nadu Samacheer Kalvi textbooks so you are ready to answer in either language.

  3. 3

Score heavily in Aptitude & Mental Ability

A quarter of the Prelims (50 of 200 questions) is aptitude and reasoning. With practice these are the most reliable marks in the paper — drill arithmetic, data interpretation and reasoning until they are quick and automatic.

  4. 4

Follow current affairs the TNPSC way

Track national and, especially, Tamil Nadu current events — schemes, appointments, awards and state policy — from a year before the exam, as current events feed both the Prelims and the Mains.

  5. 5

    Practise in your chosen language

Decide early whether you will attempt in Tamil or English, and practise mocks in that language so the terminology, especially in Polity and Economy, is second nature on exam day.

  6. 6

    Bridge into the Mains early

Because the Mains decides your rank, begin answer-writing practice alongside your Prelims revision. Aim to qualify the Prelims with a clear margin so you can turn your attention fully to the descriptive papers.

TNPSC Group 1 marks, cut-offs & merit

The Preliminary exam is a screening stage — your marks decide whether you reach the Mains, while the final merit rank is built from the Mains (750) and the oral test (100). The bands below are indicative Prelims zones; the category-wise cut-offs are the marks that recent cycles have needed to clear the Prelims.

Quick, reliable answers to the questions TNPSC Group 1 aspirants ask most.

What is the TNPSC Group 1 Prelims exam pattern?

The Preliminary examination is a single objective paper of 200 questions worth 300 marks (each question carries 1.5 marks), to be completed in 3 hours. It covers General Studies at degree standard (150 questions) and an Aptitude & Mental Ability Test (50 questions). There is no negative marking, and the paper is available in both Tamil and English.

Is TNPSC Group 1 conducted in Tamil and English?

Yes. TNPSC Group 1 is a bilingual examination — the question paper is provided in both Tamil and English, and candidates may read and answer in whichever official language they prefer. The Main examination additionally includes a qualifying Tamil Eligibility Test.

What is the selection process for TNPSC Group 1?

Selection has three stages: a Preliminary examination (objective, used only for screening), a Main examination (descriptive — a qualifying Tamil paper plus three General Studies papers of 250 marks each), and an oral test of 100 marks. The final merit rank is based on the Mains and the oral test; the Prelims marks are not added to the final total.

Which posts are offered under TNPSC Group 1?

Group 1 leads to senior posts such as Deputy Collector, Deputy Superintendent of Police, Assistant Commissioner (Commercial Taxes), District Registrar and Deputy Registrar of Co-operative Societies. The specific post you receive depends on your final merit rank and your stated preferences.

What is the eligibility for TNPSC Group 1?

You need a Bachelor's degree in any discipline and must be within the age band for the exam (generally 21–32 years, with relaxations for reserved categories). Adequate knowledge of Tamil is required, and the Mains includes a qualifying Tamil Eligibility Test.

How should I use mock tests to prepare for TNPSC Group 1?

Because the Prelims rewards speed and broad accuracy without negative marking, take full-length bilingual mocks in your chosen language to practise attempting all 200 questions in 3 hours. Use subject and topic tests — especially for the Tamil Nadu-specific units and Aptitude — to build depth, then review each mock to close your weak areas before the next attempt.
