About the WBJEE exam

A state-level entrance exam for admission to undergraduate engineering, technology and pharmacy programmes in government and self-financing institutions across West Bengal, with allotment decided by WBJEE rank through the Board's centralised counselling.

What is the WBJEE exam?

WBJEE is the West Bengal Joint Entrance Examination conducted by the West Bengal Joint Entrance Examinations Board (WBJEEB) for admission to undergraduate engineering, technology and pharmacy programmes in government-aided and self-financing institutions across West Bengal. It is a state-level exam whose rank feeds the Board's centralised e-counselling, through which candidates are allotted a branch and college based on their merit rank, category and preferences.

The exam is a pen-and-paper OMR test held as two papers on the same day: Paper I is Mathematics and Paper II combines Physics and Chemistry, for a total of 155 questions and 200 marks. Because the Mathematics paper alone carries half the marks, WBJEE is distinctly Maths-heavy, and strong, accurate mathematics is usually what separates the top ranks.

How to crack WBJEE

Mathematics is the highest-weighted section, so it deserves the most practice: algebra, quadratics, complex numbers, matrices and determinants, calculus, definite integrals, coordinate geometry, vectors and 3D, probability and trigonometry all recur, and speed with accuracy here lifts your rank the most. Physics rewards clear command of mechanics, thermodynamics, electromagnetism, optics and modern physics, while Chemistry rewards steady coverage of physical, inorganic and organic topics from the Class 11 and 12 syllabus.

WBJEE's three-category pattern shapes strategy. Category 1 and Category 2 questions are single-correct and carry 1/4 negative marking, so disciplined attempting matters. Category 3 questions can have more than one correct option with partial marking and no negative marking, so they reward careful, complete reasoning without the fear of a penalty. Nationality
Indian citizen; domicile and residency conditions apply for certain seat categories and quotas as specified by WBJEEB.
Qualification
Passed or appearing in the Class 12 (10+2) examination with Physics and Mathematics as compulsory subjects, along with Chemistry, Biology, Biotechnology or a technical/vocational subject.
Minimum marks
At least 45% aggregate (40% for reserved categories) in Physics, Mathematics and the third subject taken together, as per the current notification.
Age
A minimum age of 17 years as on 31 December of the admission year; upper age limits apply to specific programmes such as marine engineering.
Subjects
Candidates must have studied and passed Physics and Mathematics individually to be eligible for engineering and technology streams.
Attempts
No fixed limit on the number of attempts as long as the age and qualification criteria are met.

WBJEE is a pen-and-paper OMR exam of 155 questions carrying 200 marks, held as two papers on the same day: Paper I is Mathematics (75 questions, 100 marks) and Paper II is Physics (40 questions, 50 marks) and Chemistry (40 questions, 50 marks). Questions fall into three categories. Category 1 questions carry 1 mark each and have a single correct option, with 1/4 mark deducted for a wrong answer. Category 2 questions carry 2 marks each and also have a single correct option, again with 1/4 mark (0.5) deducted for a wrong answer. Category 3 questions carry 2 marks each and may have one or more correct options, with partial marking and no negative marking. Admission is by WBJEE rank through the Board's centralised counselling.
